We continue visiting Wat Phnom, standing atop the artificial hill built in the 15th century stands a stupa containing the ashes of a king from the same period.

DAY 02: PHNOM PENH

  • After breakfast, we visit the killing field of Cheung Ek – a soccer-field-sized area surrounded by farmland, the killing fields contain mass graves, slightly sunken, for perhaps 20,000 Cambodians, many of whom were tortured before being killed. A memorial building stands in the centre of the killing fields, many of the skulls inside were pulled from the mass graves, we visit the Toul Sleng, known as the Museum of Genocide Crimes. In 1975 Toul Svay Prey High school was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and turned into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21). It was used by the Khmer Rouge as detention and torture centre in the later 1970. Today the building houses exhibits, paintings and photographs of many of the victims.
